News

The process of making Red Route began in August 2007 and through the many months that passed the cast and crew worked tirelessly to bring the project to fruition. Now with only two days of pick ups left the film is entering the final stages of post production.

Cast

Chris Clark - Karl

Chris first joined the production team after responding to a news article about a short film called Empathy. After working with Abela Productions on this project Chris was later to be cast as Karl in Red Route.

Being a talented musician and filmmaker, Chris was comfortable when it came to stepping into the spotlight and did so with unwavering commitment and passion. His character has a complicated emotional journey to make in the film and so the role was a challenge that Chris responded to professionally, “I actually really like working hard if it's something I enjoy and it's a project that I believe in. This was definitely the case with Red Route.”

Kit Tinsley - Matt

A writer, filmmaker, and musician, Kit also appeared in the short film Empathy before the idea was put forward to make a feature film. After a meeting in the Carre Arms in Sleaford one evening, Kit, Chris, Stephen and Richard first discussed a film idea about a big cat in the Lincolnshire countryside, an acorn what would eventually grow into Red Route. Being an aficionado of horror films, Kit’s first task was to create the characters and develop a storyline.

Kit not only wrote the script but also took played one of the major characters, Matt, a role which was also demanding, “I think he's a troubled soul. Someone who finds it hard to express his emotions and that this sometimes results in violent outburst. I think he is also quite impulsive and often acts without thinking through the consequences.” Despite the tiring nature of the filming, and the relentless rain that caused disruptions, Kit found the production of Red Route an inspiring experience. He already has new film ideas that he is working on.

Sam Sillett - Laura

Another musician and singer, Sam came to the project with an experienced background having appeared in a number of musicals on the West End. The character of Laura was proving a difficult one to cast, but after a meeting with Sam in the Axe in Boston, the final actor was put in place and the cameras were ready to roll.

Sam also found the shoot quite a challenge, especially after all the bad weather which included heavy rain and unexpected snowfalls. Talking of her role, Sam says, “She's very emotional. She just wants love and trust but ends up hurting the people closest to her. She’s a bit of a rollercoaster either crying or being sick!”

Oliver Fabian – Tim

Having worked with Abela Productions on Empathy, in which Olly played the lead role, the door was firmly left open for him to collaborate with the team again on Red Route. With an infectiously entertaining spirit, Olly also brought professionalism to the project, having previously worked in a variety of theatre and television productions. Playing the role of Tim, his character is out with his girlfriend in the woods one day when he is dragged into the action and the unfortunate events that befall them.

Tizzy Snookes – Julie

Usually found behind the camera as a make-up artist, Tizzy was thrust in front of the camera this time in the role of Julie. Playing Tim’s boyfriend, Tizzy had some interesting scenes to perform with him, and only suffered a few cases of the giggles once the cameras were rolling. She handled the role with quiet composure, despite what the crew put her through with her demanding role.

Anne Lomax – Booth

Having recently moved to Lincolnshire, Anne was looking to get back into amateur dramatics when she saw the Boston Standard news article asking for local actors to come forward. Fancying having a go at a feature film instead, Anne attended the open audition session and was cast in the role of Booth, a role which was to grow as the script continued to develop.

Jonathan Coffey – Pearce

Jonathan joined the production after responding to the article in the Boston Standard. As a primary school teacher, Jonathan had little previous acting experience having only acted before in school plays. He did, however, recently provide his voice for hospital soap dispensers! But wanting to have another shot at acting, Jonathan attended the audition session and was cast in the role of Pearce. Playing a much troubled character, Jonathan had to go to some very ‘dark places’ to bring the intensity to his scenes. Seeing the input, commitment and professionalism that went into the production, Jonathan feels that Red Route will be a great success once completed. Jonathan is currently rehearsing at the Blackfriars in Boston in a production of The Buddy Holly Story, playing the role of Norman Petty.

Maria Veall – Mrs Pritchard

A newcomer to acting, Maria was brought on board when Chris asked her if she would play a small, non-speaking role. Thinking that she would only have to nod and cry a little, Maria attended an audition where the production team immediately thought that she would be suited to the role of Mrs Pritchard. It was a role that Maria stepped into effortlessly and made her own.

Crew

Stephen Abela – Director / Camera

Having initially come up with an idea for a horror story about a big cat stalking the countryside, Stephen also came up with the title for the project after he kept seeing the Red Route signs appearing by the sides of the dangerous roads in the county. Adding this subtext of danger to life in the countryside for young people, Stephen had a crystal clear vision of the project which he meticulously brought about.

As the footage is being assembled, Stephen’s ambitions are continuing to grow. Already the production of the next feature film is underway, and a further film is in the pipeline beyond that.

Richard Dutton – Producer / Sound

Holding the production together was Richard, who coordinated the different elements of the shoot. Richard slowly pulled his hair out during the shoot as he heard through his sound equipment the many planes flying overhead that disrupted filming. During the production, Richard would spend most of his evenings cooking up the gallons of blood that were used throughout the shoot.
